Thursday’s grain trade found support from a strong weekly export sales report, even as a firmer U.S. dollar and generally favorable Midwest weather tempered enthusiasm. Traders continue to monitor crop conditions and weather forecasts as planting season advances across much of the Corn Belt.

The cattle market, however, endured a brutal session. While the industry has known for weeks that the Cargill beef processing facility in Fort Morgan, Colorado, has been dark, news of a labor lockout grabbed the attention of trading algorithms and sparked another round of selling pressure in cattle futures. The reaction came despite the plant’s shutdown being a well-known issue among cattle producers and traders, highlighting just how quickly headlines can influence market direction.
