As global markets tighten restrictions on single-use and plastic packaging, U.S. specialty crop producers face mounting challenges in accessing key export destinations. To address this, the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR), in collaboration with Clemson University, the International Fresh Produce Association’s Foundation for Fresh Produce (FFP), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, has launched the Packaging Innovation Program to promote research and development of sustainable packaging solutions for American growers and exporters.
FFAR is accepting applications on behalf of Clemson and FFP for the Packaging Innovation Program, a competitive grant designed to accelerate innovation in packaging materials that meet international sustainability standards. The initiative aims to help producers and exporters comply with new packaging regulations emerging in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and other global markets.
This program expands on the success of last year’s effort, which supported research into compostable, reusable, and recyclable materials that allow U.S. exporters to adapt to evolving environmental packaging laws.
“Innovation is essential for maintaining the competitiveness of U.S. specialty crops in global markets,” said Dr. Constance Gewa, FFAR scientific program director. “Through this program we are supporting practical, scalable solutions that enhance sustainability while expanding export opportunities for American producers.”
The new round of funding will prioritize novel packaging designs and materials capable of replacing single-use plastics while maintaining core packaging functions—such as product protection, quality preservation, and shelf-life extension—in cost-effective and scalable ways.
To assist applicants, FFAR will host an informational webinar on Nov. 10, 2025, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. Registration is required to attend.
Applications for the Packaging Innovation Program are due by 5 p.m. EST on Dec. 17, 2025. Additional details and submission information are available on the Packaging Innovation Program open opportunity webpage.
