Following multiple delays, the world’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant is now expected to begin operating before the end of 2025. Bloomberg reports that LanzaJet, Inc. will produce green jet fuel from ethanol at its $200 million facility in rural Georgia. Originally slated for commercial production in 2024, the plant is now anticipated to launch by late September after equipment issues pushed back the timeline.

The project is being closely watched as a key indicator of the ethanol-to-jet fuel sector’s viability. LanzaJet previously imported Brazilian sugarcane ethanol in 2024 for pilot production, but more than a year later, the company has yet to sell its SAF on the open market. “I hope that by the end of the third quarter, we are fully operational,” said LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis. “The modifications we made to the equipment hindering us should satisfy what we need to do.”
